Field Notes - Cornish Winters - Part One
Welcome to the latest edition of "ETHEREAL" - A publication dedicated to abstraction and intentional camera movement photography
Hello and welcome. I hope that you are all keeping well and looking forward to the festive season!
In what seems like the blink of an eye, the end of another year is fast approaching, and for me, a year to look back on with gratitude, especially where photography is concerned. I have just finished my schedule of Autumn workshops, and have time to reflect and write about some truly special memories, locations and conditions.
This edition will focus on a week long retreat that we held at the start of November in the far West of Cornwall, where we witnessed incredible high moon tides, crashing waves and some stunning light. All perfect conditions for ICM photography!
The jewel in the crown of Cornwall, Porthcurno takes my breath away every time I set foot on its golden sands. When the light catches a wave, the colours are rich and turquoise, leaving you entranced.
Field Notes - Cornwall, November 2025 - Part One
Experiencing Cornwall outside of the high season is a truly unique experience, and being by the Coast in November is certainly an invigorating one!
The crowds have dispersed, the shutters have come down on the ice cream huts, and even the lifeguards have retreated to the safety of land until spring rolls around once again. What remains are the raw elements of the Coast, and with distractions removed your senses become tuned to the pounding sounds of the Ocean, the waves now large enough to leave the taste of salt on the lips from the spray, the wind seemingly driving incoming tide closer and closer by the minute.
This is the season to experience Cornwall. To stand in awe and witness the power of nature, to show respect to the sea as it shows us what it can be capable of. The rocks of the beach have stood the test of time, but will eventually falter and smooth away, abrasion the inevitable result.
We witnessed extreme high tides due to the supermoon, which brought the waves crashing onto the beach - an exhilarating experience
The Cornish coast has once again stolen a piece of my heart, with the only way I can try and give back being to capture the beauty I have witnessed through abstraction.
I hope that you have enjoyed part one of the Field Notes from our week in Cornwall. Part two will focus on experiences from some of the other stunning locations we visited during the trip.

As someone who lives in Cornwall I agree winter is one of the best times here to really enjoy all these beautiful places with hardly anyone there. And yes Porthcurno is stunning isn't it. Great photos.
Now I just have to get a spot in next November’s workshop…
